Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve Got Answers
How should I prepare for my initial consultation?
For me to best understand your individual situation, please fill out all "New Client" documentation that will be sent via e-mail. This means that I have the necessary information to get started straight away rather than taking up our time with filling out paperwork. Additionally it is best if your baby is ready for a feed within our appointment time so that I can better assess any concerns or questions you may have. Please see "What should I have handy at an appointment" below.
How should I prepare for my follow-up consultation?
As with our initial consultation please have your baby/infant/toddler/child ready for a feed (if applicable). As well as any questions or concerns that have risen since we made our last plan. A follow-up consultation form is sent via e-mail at booking. Please fill out this document prior to our appointment.
Do you offer home consultations?
Currently all of my appointments are via home consultations, at your home. In the future I may run out of an office - giving each individual the option of a home or office based consultation. This will enable those who live further away to see me without a travel fee. Additionally, this will allow me to add new services, so... watch this space!
What should I have handy at an appointment?
All the usual baby necessities, as well as any breastfeeding devices you are using (e.g. nipple shield, nipple balm, etc). This can include a breast pump if you need help with your specific breast-pump. Your baby's blue book and hospital discharge papers are also useful.
How do Medicare rebates and Private Health Insurance reduce my fees?
Good question! This is a tricky one. Medicare rebates have conditions and only some Private Health Insurers give rebates. Contact me by e-mail for information on Medicare rebates and contact your Private Health Fund to see what they can provide for you. Rebates are not guaranteed due to Medicare and Private Health Insurer conditions which depend on individual circumstances.
What suburbs do you service?
I am based in Singleton and drive up to 30 minutes free of charge. Suburbs outside of this radius invoke a $50 travel fee (up to 1 hour): Maitland, Scone, & Muswellbrook, for example. For those outside of this region but need assistance I am happy to travel further for those who need it, please send me an e-mail to discuss.
What does phone or e-mail support entail?
I offer phone, text and/or e-mail support following Initial and Follow-up Consultations to help guide and support you. These are included in the price of these appointments.
Additional support by phone/text/e-mail can be bought for $50 per week. This is available for any client I have seen but must be taken in consecutive week/s following Initial or Follow Up Consultations.

I endeavour to answer all texts or e-mails within 12-24 hours. Phone support must be prearranged at a time suitable for both yourself and Kelly's Milky Way. This could be as simple as booking 2 days in advance, or texting me on the day asking if a phone consult was available sometime that day. Due to other work and/or family commitments I may not answer my phone if not prearranged and thus the option of leaving a voice message is available.

* Phone, text or e-mail support provided is stipulated on the bookings page. Please view this prior to booking as conditions may change over time.
* E-mails sent by those I have not met previously will have a longer wait time, as I prioritise those who I am currently assisting and supporting.
Should I book an Initial Consultation or a Breastfeeding Assessment and Baby Weigh?
Overall these are two very different appointments.
An initial Consultation is very in-depth and includes a full history review, a maternal and baby breastfeeding assessment, the formation of a written breastfeeding plan, includes ongoing support by phone/text/e-mail for 2 weeks and is 2 hours in duration. More complex breastfeeding concerns include slow weight gain, failure to thrive or breast or nipple abnormalities (for example).
On the other hand, a simple Breastfeeding Assessment and Baby Weigh are for those that are overall breastfeeding without concern but would like to check-in to make sure all is well. This could include checking for correct position and attachment, or discussing how to use a breast pump and checking for correct flange size and pumping regime (for example). This is a 45 minute appointment and does not include any extras such as the formation of a plan or ongoing phone support.

Do you have a breastfeeding concern or have you been referred by a doctor? The Initial Consultation is for you.
Overall are things going pretty well and you are just seeking reassurance? The Breastfeeding Assessment and Baby Weigh are for you.
Do you offer private midwifery care?
I would love to and wish I could. Unfortunately the insurance to cover private midwifery care is very expensive and means that I am unable to perform this service at this time. With government support and policy changes, this may be a reality in the future so that more women can receive their choice of care - whether that be private, public, or a mixture of both. My insurance covers lactation care as an Endorsed Registered Midwife working as an IBCLC but does not extend beyond that.
